MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (1-0) shrugged off a long layoff and easily took care of Chowan (0-1), 81-52, in its 2020-21 season opener Wednesday evening in a Conference Carolinas game at the Hawks Athletic Center.
The Bulldogs were led by senior center
Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) with a game-high 26 points. Last year's league player and defensive player of the year added 11 rebounds and four blocks as Barton raced to a 41-20 lead at intermission and never looked back.
Barton junior forward
Jami Tham-Morrobel (Arlington, Va.) added a double-double as well – 18 points and 10 rebounds – as the Bulldogs limited the Hawks to just 29 percent shooting (19-of-66) for the contest and blocked eight shots in the win.
Chowan was led by Destiny Robinson (Hampton, Va.) with 10 points but was the lone figure to score in double figures for the home team. Freshman guard
Lauren Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) added 11 points for the visitors, who led by as many as 33 points midway through the final period.
Barton remains on the road to take on Belmont Abbey in a league game Friday at 5:00 p.m., in Belmont, N.C., while Chowan faces North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C., on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m., as well.
