NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Barton College men's and women's indoor track and field teams put on another strong showing, this time coming at the Vince Brown Invitational at the Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
On the women's side, junior Jasmine Watson (Suffolk, Va.) won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.03 seconds to lead the Bulldogs. In addition, sophomore Taylynn Blunt (Hampton, Va.) took fourth in the long jump (16'11") while sophomore Ashley Teilborg (Sneads Ferry, N.C.) had a pair of top-ten finishes in the weight throw (seventh) and shot put (ninth) with marks of 31'0" and 29'9", respectively.
In the women's distance competition, sophomore Morgan Lane (Elm City, N.C.) and freshman Isabel Reed (Wilson, N.C.) placed seventh and eighth in the 5,000-meter run with times of 20:22 and 20:23, respectively.
In men's action, Barton's weight throw performance shined with senior Avery Smith (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Chianti Ghee (Fayetteville, N.C.) taking second (51'8") and third (49'2") place. Ghee also finished eighth in the shot put (41'11").
The Barton distance medley relay – consisting of sophomore Deshawn Owens (Pikeville, N.C.) and juniors Greg Gibbs (Newark, N.J.), Evan Lee (Wilson, N.C.) and Nicolas Leek (Manahawkin, N.J.) – finished first with a time of 11:24.11. Lee and Owens also took seventh (2:05) and eighth (2:08) in the mile, respectively.
Finally, sophomore Quante Downey (Rocky Mount, N.C.) placed fifth overall in the pole vault (12'7") for the Bulldogs.
The Barton men's and women's track and field teams next compete in the 2020 Conference Carolinas Indoor Championships on Sunday, February 23, at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
