Barton women's basketball responds with 68-62 win over first-place Belmont Abbey

Box Score

WILSON, N.C. –  The Barton women's basketball team (8-4, 5-2) took down first-place Belmont Abbey (10-2, 5-1) by a 68-62 score in Conference Carolinas action Thursday evening at Wilson Gymnasium.

Barton junior center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the team with 19 points while senior guard Summer Baer (Fleming Island, Fla.) added 13 points and three treys as the Bulldogs snapped the Crusaders' 10-game winning streak.

Barton also exacted some revenge after Belmont Abbey won on its home court over the Bulldogs, 80-66, in the previous contest between the two teams just 13 days ago.  Maria Kuhlman (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) led all scorers with 21 points for the Crusaders, who suffered their first league setback of the season.

The Bulldogs opened up a 36-24 lead at intermission and held on the rest of the way.  Belmont Abbey cut the margin to two points – 55-53 – with under four minutes left before Barton junior guard Khayla Mitchell (Bel Air, Md.) hit the first of two three-pointers to keep the home squad in control.  Mitchell finished with nine points off the bench.

Barton hits the road to take on Lees-McRae in a league contest Saturday at 2:00 p.m., in Banner Elk, N.C., while Belmont Abbey plays at North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C., on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m., as well.
