Barton track and field continues outdoor campaign at the 2019 Adidas Trojan Challenge

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's outdoor track and field teams returned to competition at the 2019 Adidas Trojan Challenge – hosted by the University of Mount Olive – Saturday at Ray McDonald, Sr., Sports Complex.

In the team standings, Barton finished fifth in both the men's and women's competition with 56 and 61 points, respectively.  Mount Olive's men (187.5 points) and women (213 points) took home both team titles.

On the men's side starting with middle distance, sophomore Greg Gibbs (Newark, N.J.) took sixth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.77 while sophomore Nicholas Leek (Manahawkin, N.J.) finished sixth as well in the 1,500-meter run (4:14.88) for the Bulldogs.

In addition, Barton junior Micah Clemons (Greenville, N.C.) – the reigning conference men's field athlete of the week – won the hammer throw (186'10) for the second straight week and earned third-place honors in the shot put (49'2") as well as a sixth-place finish in the discus throw (137'4").

The men's javelin also saw sophomore Chianti Ghee (Fayetteville, N.C.) take second place overall (124'4") for the Bulldogs.

The Barton's women's team was spearheaded by a trio of second-place finishes:  freshman Danyetta Ruffin (Newport News, Va.) in the 400-meter dash (59.47) and freshman Taylynn Blunt (Hampton, Va.) in the 100-meter (14.84) and 400-meter hurdles (1:06.83).

Barton freshman Takeitha Glaspie (Goldsboro, N.C.) took third place in the women's 200-meter dash (25.31) while junior Meghan Araldi (Albany, N.Y.) was fourth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:31.31) and Ruffin took fifth in the women's long jump (17'4").

The Barton men's and women's outdoor track and field teams next compete at the Phoenix Invitational on Saturday, April 6, at Elon University in Elon, N.C.
