Barton women's basketball lets lead slip away in falling to Emmanuel, 63-56

Box Score

WILSON, N.C. –  The Barton women's basketball team (5-3, 2-1) couldn't hold a 14-point lead in the third quarter in suffering its first Conference Carolinas loss of the season, 63-56 to Emmanuel (Ga.) (5-3, 2-0) Thursday evening in Wilson Gymnasium.

The Lions' Ajah Taylor (Walhalla, S.C.) and Morgan Simmons (Buford, Ga.) both scored 13 points as Emmanuel rallied from a 42-28 deficit with 6:25 remaining in the third period in taking its third straight win.

Barton junior center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched her seventh straight double-double – 24 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs – but was the lone player to score in double figures for the Bulldogs in the setback.  Barton lost despite a 53-40 advantage on the boards.

The home team, however, hit just four-of-25 three-pointers including three on one possession late in the contest that could've tied it up.  Trailing by a 56-55 score with just under three minutes left, Emmanuel reeled off the final eight points including the game-winning shot by Taylor.

In the next round of Conference Carolinas games on Saturday, Barton remains at home to take on King (Tenn.) beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Emmanuel faces Mount Olive in Mount Olive, N.C., starting at 5:30 p.m.
