Barton women's basketball opens league play with convincing win over Erskine, 78-48

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (4-1, 1-0) opened Conference Carolinas play with a 78-48 win over Erskine (0-5, 0-1) Saturday afternoon at Wilson Gymnasium.

Barton sophomore guard Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) led all scorers with a career-high 27 points in addition to seven treys while junior center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 14 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots as the Bulldogs outscored the Flying Fleet by a 24-8 margin in the decisive third period to take the win.

Erskine's Alexis Scott (Anderson, S.C.) tallied a double-double – 16 points and 11 rebounds – but the Flying Fleet shot just 33 percent (20-of-61) for the game and turned the ball over 22 times in the setback.  Barton also blocked 12 shots as a team.

Peterkin has a double-double in four straight games and the Bulldogs hit 10 three-pointers in the victory to end a three-game home stand.  Barton junior guard Michelle Gainey (Rocky Mount, N.C.) added nine points and four assists as well.

Barton returns to the court on Tuesday, November 26, when the Bulldogs travel to Greenwood, S.C., to take on Lander beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Erskine plays on the road against Emmanuel (Ga.) in league action Monday at 5:30 p.m.
