GREENVILLE, N.C. – Both the Barton College men's and women's cross country teams finished 14th overall at the 2019 Pirate Invitational which took place on Friday evening at Overton's Lake Kristi and hosted by East Carolina University. Both teams were competing against mostly NCAA Division I competition.
On the men's side, Duke took home team honors while Coastal Carolina's Nadeel Wildschutt (Ceres, SOUTH AFRICA) was the top individual on the 8K course, finishing with a time of 23:21. Barton sophomore Deshawn Owens (Pikeville, N.C.) was the top Bulldog in the race after taking 100th overall in 27:38.
In the women's race, Elon had three of the top four runners including the winner – Scolasticah Kemei (Eldoret, KENYA) – who finished the 6K in 20:25. Barton was paced once again by freshman Isabel Reed (Wilson, N.C.), who took 99th overall with a time of 25:07.
Both the Barton men's and women's cross country teams will next compete in the 2019 Conference Carolinas Championships next Saturday, October 26, in Mount Olive, N.C., on the campus of Mount Olive. The men's race starts at 10:00 a.m., following by the women's competition beginning at 11:00 a.m.
