Barton indoor track and field starts season strong at the JDL College Kick-off Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's indoor track and field teams got their 2018-19 campaigns off to an impressive start this past weekend at the JDL College Kick-off Classic at the JDL Fast Track.

On the men's side, Barton senior Larry Russell (Sicklerville, N.J.), a two-time NCAA Division II Indoor All-American (2017-18) and last year's indoor track Southeast Region and Conference Carolinas field athlete of the year, placed second overall in the long jump (7.25 meters).  The mark provisionally qualified him for nationals.  In addition, Russell finished fourth in the high jump (2.00 meters) and earned a spot in the league championship in February.

Junior Micah Clemons (Greenville, N.C.) placed third in both the men's weight throw (a school-record 16.87 meters) and men's shot put (13.93 meters) for the Bulldogs while qualifying to the league championship meet.  In addition, sophomore Chianti Ghee (Fayetteville, N.C.) also produced conference qualifying marks in the weight throw (13.03 meters) and shot put (12.74 meters).

On the women's side, five Bulldogs earned qualification to the league meet:  junior Kelsey Poole (Oakboro, N.C.) in the weight throw (personal-best 13.55 meters) and shot put (10.78 meters), junior Janae Cunningham (Hubert, N.C.) in the weight throw (12.30 meters), freshman Taylynn Blunt (Hampton, Va.) in the long jump (5.03 meters) and sophomore Jasmine Watson (Suffolk, Va.) in the 60-meter hurdles (9.41 seconds).  Poole finished tenth in the weight throw.
