ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's swimming teams fell to Mary Washington in the Bulldogs' home opener Saturday afternoon at the Harrison Family YMCA. The men's squad lost a close contest to the Eagles by a 133-129 score while the women's team suffered a 170-90 setback.
On the men's side, Barton freshman Jonathan York (Midlothian, Va.) led the way with three individual victories: the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:56.49), the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.88) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.03). Freshman Tegan Brown (Acworth, Ga.) finished first in a pair of races – the 100-yard backstroke (52:47) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.48).
Finally, Barton's quartet of juniors James Day (Essex, ENGLAND) and Robert Zamorano (Woodstock, Ga.), sophomore Harrison Strutz (Plymouth, Wisconsin) and freshman Colton Spence (New Hill, N.C.) won the men's 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:14.83.
In the women's competition, the Bulldogs were led by sophomore Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA). Cathers won the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.02) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.18).
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay – featuring Cathers, freshman Adalaya Nemitz (Waxhaw, N.C.), sophomores Alayna Moore (Terre Haute, Ind.) and Nicola Macdonald (Durban, SOUTH AFRICA) – placed first overall with a 3:42.22. Macdonald also won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:03.74.
Both squads return to the pool on Friday, November 9, in Hampden-Sydney, Va., where the men's team will face Hampden-Sydney and Randolph Macon while the Bulldog women face Randolph Macon in a dual meet beginning at 6:00 p.m.
