Barton women's basketball gets by UNC Pembroke, 76-72, to stay unbeaten on the season

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Barton women's basketball team (2-0) stayed perfect on the year with a 76-72 triumph over UNC Pembroke (1-1) Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Peach Belt Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge at Augusta University's Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Bulldogs were led by senior guard Dinah Neal (Browns Summit, N.C.) with a team-high 16 points including 10-for-10 from the charity stripe while senior guard Carmen Richardson (Rocky Mount, N.C.) added 15 points in the victory.

UNC Pembroke's Melanie Horne (Troy, N.C.) led all scorers with 17 points but the Braves were done in by 20 turnovers which directly led to 21 points by the Bulldogs.

Barton trailed by a 62-59 score with just under six minutes remaining in the contest but took the lead for good with seven straight points including freshman guard Akira Wiggins' (Knightdale, N.C.) three-point play.  The Bulldogs also stayed ahead the rest of the way thanks to their performance from the free throw line.  Barton hit 20-of-23 attempts (87 percent) including 11 straight over the final 4:23 of the contest.

Barton opens the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, November 13, against Saint Augustine's beginning at 6:00 p.m., at Wilson Gymnasium.  UNC Pembroke hosts Lenoir-Rhyne on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
