Women's basketball begins new year with 87-78 win over North Greenville

WILSON, N.C. – Despite trailing at the half, the Barton women's basketball team used a second half rally to come away with an 87-78 victory over Conference Carolinas foe North Greenville University on Tuesday evening inside Wilson Gymnasium.

Sophomore Kianna Wynn turned in her fourth double-double of the season with 29 points on 14-for-21 shooting from the floor and 10 rebounds. Junior Karimah Dean, the reigning Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Player of the Week, also had a double-double of 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end of the floor for Barton (6-5, 3-2).

Fellow junior Tatyana Jackson chipped in 14 points of her own, making 4-of-8 shots from beyond the 3-point line, while sophomore Dinah Neal had nine points off of the bench. Sophomore Ciera Williams dished out a career-high eight assists to go along with six points in the win.

North Greenville (3-7, 0-4) raced out to an early 24-17 lead in the first quarter of play behind 17 combined points from guards Cameron Carter and Mychala Wolfe. However, the Lady Bulldogs shot 56.3 percent in the second period to climb within one-point of the NGU lead at intermission.

Wynn opened the second half with a layup to give BC a one-point lead before the Crusaders reclaimed the advantage on a layup from Divonnie Powell with just over nine minutes to go in the third quarter.

A 3-pointer by Jackson followed by another Wynn layup gave Barton a four-point lead with 8:11 remaining in the period. The Lady Bulldogs never trailed again in the second half, building an advantage of as large as 11 points late in the third quarter.

The Crusaders made 53.4 percent of their shots in the game, compared to a 50 percent shooting mark by the Lady Bulldogs, however Barton held a decisive 40-24 advantage in total rebounds and outscored NGU 36-9 in points off of the bench.

Barton will be in action once again on Friday, January 6 when the team hosts Southern Wesleyan University at 5:30 p.m. in Wilson.
