Carter's career day leads BC past Erskine

WILSON, N.C. – Senior center Caila Carter scored a career-high 25 points for Barton as the women's basketball team secured a 92-65 Conference Carolinas victory over Erskine College on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Gym.

The win was Barton's second over the Fleet this season and sealed the season sweep for BC which improved to 8-6 overall and 5-3 in league play. Erskine's record fell to 6-7 with a matching 5-3 mark within the conference.

Barton shot a season-high 51.6 percent from the field thanks in large part 48 points in the paint. BC also made 6 of 13 attempts from the 3-point line, while holding a 44-32 edge in total rebounds. The two sides combined for 62 total turnovers in the contest.

Neither side was able to gain an edge in the early going of the game as the scoreboard saw three ties in the opening three minutes of play. A layup from sophomore Kianna Wynn, followed by back-to-back buckets in the low post from Carter put Barton up by four points midway through the first quarter.

Freshman Summer Baer made the second of her three 3-pointers in the game to open the second quarter as the Barton lead grew to a 19-point edge following consecutive threes from junior Taura Jones and Baer with just under two minutes remaining in the half. BC carried a 41-24 lead into intermission after shooting 47 percent from the floor in the game's first 20 minutes.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the third quarter with another 3-pointer, this time by freshman Angela Caraballo. Erskine's Ashley Espinosa responded with seven unanswered points to cut the deficit to 12 points, but junior Tatyana Jackson answered with a 3-pointer to put BC back ahead by 15 points.

Jackson's basket sparked a 9-2 run to put BC ahead by 19 before the Flying Fleet scored 10 straight points to climb back to a 10-point deficit. Barton led 65-53 heading in the fourth quarter where the Lady Bulldogs stretched their advantage to its largest of the game at 88-61 with 2:41 remaining in the game.

Carter's career-high point total came on a 10-for-12 shooting performance to go along with eight rebounds. Wynn followed with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Dinah Neal had 12 points and five assists in her first start of the season.

Junior Karimah Dean chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds off of the bench, while Jackson filled up the stat sheet with five points, a season-high eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals.

Barton hits the road for its next Conference Carolinas contest against Converse College on Monday, January 16 in Spartanburg, S.C.
