SAVANNAH, Ga. – After a second half comeback forced an overtime period, the Barton women's basketball team fell to host Armstrong State University 80-73 in the 3rd Annual B.J. Ford Classic on Friday night inside Alumni Arena.
Armstrong State began the game scoring 15 points before Barton was able to get on the scoreboard with a jumper from senior JerBria Smith. The Pirates carried an 11-point lead into intermission with a 41-30 score and extended their advantage back to 15 points, 60-45, with just over eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
However, a layup from sophomore Ciera Williams sparked a 22-7 run for Barton over the final eight minutes of regulation. A three-pointer by junior Tatyana Jackson with 5.1 second remaining on the clock sent the game into overtime.
Seven points from Armstrong State's Brigitta Barta in the first two minutes of the extra period moved ASU's lead to a six-point advantage as back-to-back Machala Raymoville layups put the Pirates ahead for good with just over a minute remaining. Jackson sank another three-pointer, her fourth of the night, with 14 seconds left to secure the final score and a seven-point deficit.
Jackson finished with 12 points and five assists for the Lady Bulldogs, while senior Caila Carter totaled a career-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor. Sophomore Kianna Wynn followed with 17 points of her own to go with seven rebounds, as Williams had seven points and a career-high six rebounds in 30 minutes of action.
Barton shot 40.3 percent in the contest compared to 46.9 percent for Armstrong State. The Pirates also held a 42-39 advantage in total rebounds and outscored BC in the paint, 32-20.
The Lady Bulldogs conclude play in the B.J. Ford Classic, taking on Clayton State University at 2 p.m.
