CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Barton College women's basketball team dropped its second consecutive game to open the season, falling 86-78 to Catawba College on the final day of the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge on the campus of Queens University.
Barton (0-2) committed just 13 turnovers while forcing 23, but allowed Catawba (2-0) to shoot 54.2 percent from the field. The Indians held a 43-33 edge in total rebounds as the Barton bench poured in 41 points in the contest.
Sophomore Tatyana Jackson paced the Lady Bulldogs with a career-high 18 points, making all seven of her attempts from the free throw line. Junior transfer JerBria Smith chipped in 15 points in 15 minutes as a reserve, while fellow junior Caila Carter recorded her second straight double-double with a 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Redshirt-sophomore Alex Kimble finished the game with 13 points as freshman Kianna Wynn totaled 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for Barton.
Catawba's Bri Johnson led all scorers with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Terri Rogers and Zhaquondalee Greer each totaled 16 points in the win.
The Indians built an early 20-11 lead after the first quarter, extending the advantage to 44-28 at intermission as Barton shot just 22.2 percent in the opening 10 minutes to fall into an early hole.
In the second half, BC outscored Catawba 50-42, including 25-18 in the third quarter, but the 16-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome.
Barton will host Saint Augustine's University on Tuesday, Nov. 17 in its first home game of the season. Tip-off between the Lady Bulldogs and Falcons is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Wilson Gymnasium.
