CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Barton women's volleyball team (0-2) opened the 2019 season with a pair of setbacks to Queens (3-1) and Francis Marion (3-1) by scores of 3-1 and 3-2, respectively, Saturday at the Levine Center.
Queens 3, Barton 1
The Royals beat the Bulldogs by scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-16 to spoil Barton's season opener.
Queens was led by Chanel Turner (Fort Mill, S.C.) with 12 kills and 11 digs while Anna McLain (Lincoln, Neb.) added 12 kills and the Royals limited the Bulldogs to just a .056 hitting percentage.
Barton was led by junior outside hitter and First-Team All-Conference Carolinas honoree Kaytlin Elkins (Hope Mills, N.C.) with 16 kills while sophomore setter Sarah Kirk (Pearland, Texas) added 22 assists and seven digs in the losing effort. The Bulldogs managed a victory in the second set but succumbed to the Royals in the third and fourth games.
Francis Marion 3, Barton 2
The Bulldogs fought valiantly but ultimately fell to the Patriots. Francis Marion rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win by scores of 25-17, 24-26, 18-25, 25-23 and 15-10.
The Patriots were led by Kayla Arthur (Holly Springs, N.C.) with 15 kills and Finn Millians (Atlanta, GA.) finished with 39 assists and 15 digs as Francis Marion won its third straight match. Elkins once again led Barton with 15 kills while freshman outside hitter Allison Gambill (Hickory, N.C.) added 11 kills and 11 digs in the losing effort.
Barton next competes in the USC Aiken Invitational on Friday, September 13, against Shorter (2:30 p.m.) and Auburn-Montgomery (7:30 p.m.) in Aiken, S.C.
