Barton women’s tennis ends winning streak with close setback to West Virginia State, 4-3

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's tennis team (8-4) saw its five-match winning streak come to an end with a 4-3 loss to West Virginia State (6-1) Saturday morning at the Bulldogs' complex.

The Bulldogs took the doubles' point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles but the Yellow Jackets rallied with four wins in singles' play to take the win.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs were led by freshman Isabella Caballero (La Paz, BOLIVIA) and sophomore Claudia Capellades (Barcelona, SPAIN).  Both players won at singles and doubles and teamed at No. 3 doubles to take down West Virginia State's Laura Isbey (Auckland, NEW ZEALAND) and Nika Tadic (Split, CROATIA) by a score of 7-5.

Caballero, the reigning league player of the week, improved to 10-1 on the year in singles' competition with her victory over the Yellow Jackets' Chante Malo (Stockton-on-Tees, ENGLAND), 6-2 and 6-3.

Barton will look to get back on track when the Bulldogs when they travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to take on Chowan in a league match Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.  West Virginia State plays Francis Marion in Florence, S.C., on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m.
