WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's soccer team (3-2-1, 2-1) won easily over Converse (0-5, 0-2), 4-1, in a Conference Carolinas contest Tuesday evening at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.
Barton sophomore midfielder Brenna Keegan (Huntley, Ill.) scored twice including the match-winner and added an assist as the Bulldogs scored three goals after halftime to break the contest open.
Keegan opened the scoring just 2:49 before the break after receiving a pass from senior midfielder Katie Christiansen (Niantic, Conn.) – who saved the ball from going out of bounds – and finding the back of the net as she weaved her way through the center of the field.
Barton senior midfielder Rebekah Beal (Nashville, N.C.) made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute after intercepting a pass from a Converse defender and scoring from the top of the box. Keegan followed with a goal at the 57:06 mark off a pass in the box from the right side courtesy of sophomore midfielder Hailey Russell (Jacksonville, N.C.).
Junior midfielder Evie Kenna (Aldershot, ENGLAND) round out the scoring in the 69th minute for the Bulldogs, who held a 30-6 edge in shots taken. Barton sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Davis (Willow Springs, N.C.) earned the shutout victory in her first start of the season while Darian Bankston (San Angelo, Texas) suffered the loss in goal for the Valkyries despite 13 saves. Shan Muench (Brisbane, AUSTRALIA) scored for Converse, who is still searching for its first win on the year.
Barton remains at home to face Regent (Va.) on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., while Converse hosts Emmanuel (Ga.) in a league match on Saturday beginning at 5:00 p.m.
