WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (9-5, 6-3) bounced back with a 15-9 victory over Converse (5-7, 4-4) Saturday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas contest at Hayden Abney Fulp Field.
The Bulldogs were led by sophomore attacker Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) with a game-high six goals – pushing her team-leading total to 60 – including the game-winner just 1:03 into the contest.
Three other players – sophomore attacker Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Brooke Lonergan (Grand Haven, Mich.) and junior attacker Courtney Willis (Columbia, S.C.) – scored three times for the Bulldogs in the victory as well. Scarpa dished out four assists for seven total points while increasing her single-season point total to 69.
Converse was led by Sharlize Burgos (Pennsauken, N.J.) with six goals as well but the Valkyries fell behind by an 8-2 halftime score and the deficit was too great to overcome. In goal, Barton sophomore Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the win after stopping six shots. Converse goalkeeper Myka Jones (Waldorf, Md.) suffered the loss.
Barton finishes out the regular season portion of its schedule with the home finale against Belmont Abbey next Saturday, April 13, at Noon while Converse takes on Columbia (S.C.) Wednesday on the road beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Bulldogs still have a chance to host a quarterfinal match in the league tournament championship.
