Barton women’s lacrosse suffers home loss to No. 23 Mount Olive

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (8-5, 5-3) fell to 23rd-ranked Mount Olive (9-4, 6-1) by a 16-7 score on Thursday afternoon at the Electric Supply Company Field in a Conference Carolinas game.

The Trojans' Jordan Shugrue (Laurel, Md.) scored four times while Kelly Young (Bayport, N.Y.) added three goals as Mount Olive stayed in the hunt for the league regular season title with a road victory.  Mount Olive held a 7-3 advantage early in the second half before scoring six consecutive goals to put the contest away.

Barton sophomore attacker Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) finished with three goals as well – pushing her single-season record total to 54 – while junior attacker Courtney Willis (Columbia, S.C.) scored twice as the Bulldogs saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Mount Olive held the advantages in both ground balls (34-24) and shots taken (37-16) while Siena Miller (Vail, Colo.) earned the win after playing the first half and stopping a shot.  For Barton, freshman attacker Ashley Teilborg (Sneads Ferry, N.C.) added three assists but sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) suffered the loss despite tallying nine saves.

Barton looks to rebound on Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Converse in a league contest beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Mount Olive next faces North Greenville in Tigerville, S.C., on Friday, April 12, at 6:00 p.m.
