WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (3-1) won its first home game of the season with a 65-54 triumph over Elizabeth City State (0-3) Saturday afternoon at Wilson Gymnasium.
Barton junior center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore forward Jami Tham-Morrobel (Arlington, Va.) both tallied double-doubles as the Bulldogs rallied from a 21-8 deficit at the end of the opening stanza to take the win.
Peterkin finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Tham-Morrobel added 14 points and pulled down 15 boards in the triumph over the Vikings. Barton limited Elizabeth City State to just 33 percent shooting (24-of-73) for the game and held a 48-39 edge on the boards.
Trailing by a 30-27 score early in the second half, Barton used a 9-0 run to take the lead for good capped off by a lay-up from Peterkin at the 7:21 mark of the third period. Sophomore guard Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) added 15 points and three treys for the Bulldogs.
Elizabeth City State was led by Naterria Luster (Richmond, Va.) with 22 points and 11 rebounds but hit just nine-of-25 field goal attempts in the losing effort.
Barton opens Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, November 23, when the Bulldogs host Erskine at 2:00 p.m., while Elizabeth City State hosts Claflin on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
