WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team will look to continue its recent success with the 2019-20 schedule officially released and on the horizon.

The slate includes 13 games at the newly-renovated Wilson Gymnasium with the season opener on the campus of Southern Wesleyan in Central, S.C., on Friday, November 8, and Saturday, November 9, for the annual Peach Beach Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge against Augusta University and UNC Pembroke.

"We have a very tough non-conference schedule staring with Augusta and UNCP," said Barton Head Women's Basketball Coach Wendee Saintsing.  "Both teams will be improved from last year and will be a tough out."

The non-league slate also includes home games against Francis Marion (Wednesday, November 13) and Elizabeth City State (Saturday, November 16) and a trip to Greenwood, S.C., to face Lander on Tuesday, November 26.  The Bearcats went 24-9 last year and advanced to the regional championship.

"Francis Marion and Elizabeth City State will be very athletic and will bring big defensive-minded teams.  We also go to regionally-ranked Lander before Thanksgiving and play five of the top-ranked teams in the league before Christmas," added Saintsing.  "This is probably the toughest pre-Christmas schedule we have had in many years."

The conference slate kicks off on Saturday, November 23, at home against Erskine, the first of five straight league contests at Wilson Gymnasium.  Barton shared the 2018-19 Conference Carolinas Regular Season Championship with Emmanuel (Ga.) with the two going head-to-head on Thursday, December 12, in Wilson, N.C., and Saturday, January 25, in Franklin Springs, Ga.  The Lions went 24-7 last year and won the league tournament title and advanced to the playoffs.

The Bulldogs also play Belmont Abbey in back-to-back contests:  Friday, December 20, at home and Thursday, January 2.  The Crusaders went 21-10 last year and are one of the Bulldogs' top rivals.  Senior Day for the Bulldogs is slated for Saturday, February 22, against Southern Wesleyan.

The 2020 Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship Semifinals and Finals is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on the campus of Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Bulldogs went 24-6 last year including a 16-4 mark in Conference Carolinas play.  Barton also earned a berth to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship for the second straight year and nearly knocked off top-seeded Anderson in the opening round.

Barton was also picked to finish in a first-place tie in the 2019-20 Conference Carolinas Preseason Coaches Poll with Belmont Abbey.  The Bulldogs are led by junior center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.), an-league honoree last year who averaged 9.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per contest in addition to a league-leading 103 blocks.  The top two three-point shooters – senior guard Summer Baer (Fleming Island, Fla.) and sophomore guard Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) – with 49 and 44 treys, respectively, are back as well.
