BELMONT, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (18-4, 11-4) put itself right back in the hunt for the Conference Carolinas regular season championship with a 64-58 triumph over first-place Belmont Abbey (15-7, 12-3) Wednesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
Barton senior forward Kianna Wynn (Knightdale, N.C.) tallied a double-double – 23 points and 10 rebounds – while senior guard Dinah Neal (Browns Summit, N.C.) added 17 points as the Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss to the Crusaders and moved within one game of Belmont Abbey in the race for the league regular season title. Wynn also increased her career point total to 1,925, third all-time in school history.
The Bulldogs turned up the defense in the fourth and final period – holding the Crusaders to just six points – while rallying from a 52-44 deficit late in the third stanza to take the victory. Neal broke a 56-all tie with the game-winning field goal with just over four minutes left as the Bulldogs outscored the Crusaders by an 18-6 margin in the fourth quarter.
Belmont Abbey, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, was led by Maria Kuhlman (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) with 15 points and 11 rebounds but the Crusaders were done in by 21 turnovers.
Barton sophomore center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) added five points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots – increasing her league-leading block total to 81 – as the Bulldogs also improved to 8-1 in their last nine games.
Barton next hosts Southern Wesleyan for Senior Day on Saturday in a Conference Carolinas contest at Wilson Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m., while Belmont Abbey faces Erskine in Due West, S.C., on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
