WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (17-4, 10-4) remained in the top half of the league standings with a 71-69 victory over Limestone (12-9, 9-5) in a key Conference Carolinas game Saturday afternoon at Wilson Gymnasium.
Senior guard Dinah Neal (Browns Summit, N.C.) finished with a team-high 19 points while sophomore center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) added a double-double – 13 points and 13 rebounds – in addition to six blocks for the Bulldogs, who moved into a second-place tie in the conference standings with Mount Olive. Peterkin now has a league-leading 76 blocks on the season.
Neal hit a pair of pair of free throws with two seconds left to break a 69-all tie and seal the win for Barton. Senior forward Kianna Wynn (Knightdale, N.C.), the team-leading scorer at 23.0 points per contest, added 13 points as well. Wynn ranks third all-time on the team's scoring list with 1,902 points.
Limestone's Schekinah Bimpa (Loganville, Ga.) led the way for the visitors with 21 points and 14 rebounds and was one of four Saints to score in double figures despite the loss. The Saints battled back from a 41-32 halftime deficit to take the lead on several occasions in the second half but couldn't come out on top.
Barton also held a 49-43 advantage on the boards on its way to a third straight victory.
Barton hits the road to take on Belmont Abbey on Wednesday beginning at 5:30 p.m., in league contest in Belmont, N.C., while Limestone hosts Lees-McRae on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
