DUE WEST, S.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (16-4, 9-4) ended its five-game road stand with a convincing 79-45 win over Erskine (5-14, 2-9) Saturday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas game at Belk Arena. The victory was also the Bulldogs' second straight triumph.
Barton sophomore center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with a double-double – 17 points and 10 rebounds – while senior forward Kianna Wynn (Knightdale, N.C.) added 16 points as the Bulldogs completed the season sweep of the Flying Fleet. With the victory, the Bulldogs remained in sole possession of fourth place in the league standings while Wynn increased her career point total to 1,889 (third-best all-time in school history).
Erskine – losers of three straight games – was led by Megan Davis (Columbia, S.C.) with 17 points but was the lone player to score in double figures for the Flying Fleet. Erskine shot just 27 percent (16-of-60) from the field and hit just one three-pointer in 16 attempts.
The Bulldogs, who never trailed in the contest, jumped out to a 37-23 halftime advantage and never looked back. Barton led by as many as 36 points and held a 50-38 edge on the boards. Freshman guard Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) added 11 points for Barton, who shot 19-of-34 from the charity stripe as well.
Barton does not play again until Saturday, February 2, when the Bulldogs host Limestone in a league game beginning at 2:00 p.m. Erskine, meanwhile, hosts Emmanuel (Ga.) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
