WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (16-27, 5-11) was able to split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Emmanuel (Ga.) (18-21, 7-7) Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Jeffries Field. The Lions took the first contest by a 5-4 score while the Bulldogs won the nightcap, 4-2, to salvage the split and snap an eight-game losing streak.
Game One – Emmanuel 5, Barton 4
The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 advantage and held off a Bulldogs' rally to escape with the victory. Noelle Petty (Buford, Ga.) highlighted a four-run first frame and Emmanuel was able to win despite allowing four runs to Barton in the bottom of the second inning.
Barton senior third baseman Hannah Jones (Huntersville, N.C.) had a two-run double in the frame but neither team crossed the plate after the second inning. On the mound, Emmanuel's Madison Abell (Loganville, Ga.) (10-9) allowed just one earned run in the complete game win while senior Makayla Meeks (Greenville, N.C.) (3-10) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.
Game Two – Barton 4, Emmanuel 2
Barton junior Sierra Hearp (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) improved to 6-4 on the year after allowing two unearned runs to go along with three strikeouts in the complete game victory while also driving in a run from the plate.
Freshman outfielder Gracen Rogers (Plymouth, N.C.) and sophomore designated player Taylor Freeman (Stem, N.C.) both finished with two hits and an RBI as the Bulldogs took the lead for good with a three-run second inning.
Madison Hopper (Covington, Ga.) fell to 7-6 on the year after suffering the loss for the Lions.
Barton hosts long-time rival Mount Olive in its home finale in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Friday, April 12, beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Emmanuel takes on Mount Olive on the road in a doubleheader Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
