Barton softball falls in two close contests in road doubleheader against Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Barton softball team (15-22, 4-6) fell in two close contests to Southern Wesleyan (13-15, 6-6), 7-6 and 3-2, Friday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Varsity Field.

Game One – Southern Wesleyan 7, Barton 6
The Bulldogs rallied from a 6-0 deficit after two innings of play to tie the contest at six but ultimately fell thanks to a game-winning RBI double by Southern Wesleyan's Megan New (Anderson, S.C.) in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Barton freshman shortstop Mikayla Rose (Beaufort, N.C.) deadlocked the game at six-all thanks to a two-run home run after freshman catcher McCrae Knapp (Hertford, N.C.) opened the four-run fifth inning with a two-run double.  Rose finished with three hits and three runs batted in despite the loss.

For Southern Wesleyan, Delanie Laudenbach (Due West, S.C.) improved to 5-6 on the year after earning the win while Emma Collins (Easley, S.C.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for her third save of the season.  Barton junior Sierra Hearp (Roanoke Rapids, Va.) (5-4) was tagged with the loss.

Game Two – Southern Wesleyan 3, Barton 2
The Warriors walked off the game with a victory thanks to Lydia Clanton's (Waynesboro, Miss.) run-scoring double in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to complete the sweep. 

Southern Wesleyan's Kali Berrigan (Goose Creek, S.C.) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning while Ashton Martin (Six Mile, S.C.) (7-6) allowed just one run in the complete game victory.  For Barton, Rose led off the game with a solo home run but senior Makayla Meeks (Greenville, S.C.) (3-7) suffered the setback.

Barton next travels to Tigerville, S.C., to face North Greenville in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon while Southern Wesleyan hosts Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
