MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Barton College softball team (15-20) split a road doubleheader with Chowan (9-20) Wednesday afternoon at Hawks Field. The Bulldogs run-ruled the Hawks in six innings in the first contest by a 14-4 score while Chowan salvaged the split with a victory in the nightcap, 8-6.
Game One – Barton 14, Chowan 4 (six innings)
The Bulldogs took control early – jumping out to a 10-0 advantage after three innings of work – on their way to the win. Barton took advantage of Chowan's wildness as five players for the Bulldogs scored on bases-loaded walks.
Barton freshman outfielders Gracen Rogers (Plymouth, N.C.) and Sidney Gronowski (Fayetteville, N.C.) both finished with two hits and three runs batted in while sophomore Ashton Pegram (Greensboro, N.C.) (1-1) earned her first win of the year. In addition, the Bulldogs totaled 15 hits for the contest.
Chowan's Miranda Glover (Swansboro, N.C.) hit a two-run home run but Shannon Buchanan (Virginia Beach, Va.) fell to 3-6 after taking the loss. The Hawks, however, were done in by 12 walks as well.
Game Two – Chowan 8, Barton 6
The Bulldogs lost the game despite holding a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Chowan's Lindsey Stigler (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) broke a four-all tie in the bottom of the sixth with the game-winning grand slam.
Pegram hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to two runs but the Hawks were able to register the final out with the bases loaded. Chowan's EmaRae Flores (Covina, Calif.) (6-10) went the distance in earning the win while senior Hannah Jones (Huntersville, N.C.) fell to 3-7 after taking the loss. Barton freshman shortstop Mikayla Rose (Beaufort, N.C.) added a two-run double in the setback as well.
Barton next travels to Central, S.C., to take on Southern Wesleyan in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Chowan hosts Elizabeth City State in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon.
