Barton softball sweeps Converse, 13-4 and 7-3, in Conference Carolinas opener

DUNCAN, S.C. – The Barton softball team (12-13, 2-0) ran its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of Converse (5-23, 0-4), 13-4 and 7-3, Saturday afternoon in the Conference Carolinas opener for the Bulldogs at Tyger River Park.

Game One – Barton 13, Converse 4
The Bulldogs broke a one-all tie by reeling off eight straight runs which included a five-run fourth inning to break the contest open.  Three players for Barton – freshman shortstop Mikayla Rose (Beaufort, N.C.), senior third baseman and pitcher Hannah Jones (Huntersville, N.C.) and freshman outfielder Ashley Ferguson (Wake Forest, N.C.) – all drove in three runs in the victory.

Jones – who came through with the game-winning, RBI double in the second inning – also improved to 3-6 on the season with the victory in relief.  The Bulldogs finished with 14 hits in the win over the Valkyries.

For Converse, Allison Plafcan (Maggie Valley, N.C.) drove in three runs while Hailey Spitler (Kettering, Ohio) fell to 1-7 after suffering the loss on the mound.

Game Two – Barton 7, Converse 3
The Valkyries kept the contest close – a 1-1 tie after five innings of work – before the Bulldogs took control with a four-run sixth inning including the game-winning, two-run home run from Ferguson.  Plafcan hit a home run for the Valkyries but the home team suffered its ninth consecutive setback.

Barton senior Makayla Meeks (Greenville, N.C.) improved to 3-2 after earning the win.  Meeks allowed just one run over four innings of work.  Converse's Marissa Martin (Pauline, S.C.) (2-8) was tagged with the loss.

Barton turns right around to take on Limestone in a league doubleheader on Sunday at Noon in Gaffney, S.C., while Converse hosts Mount Olive Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
