WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (1-3) split a doubleheader with Chowan (1-3) in its 2019 home opener Sunday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Bulldogs run-ruled the Hawks in the first contest by a 13-0 score while Chowan salvaged the split with a 6-3 triumph in the nightcap.
Game One – Barton 13, Chowan 0 (five innings)
Despite collecting only five hits in the contest, the Bulldogs were able to plate 13 runs thanks to nine Chowan walks and three hit-by-pitches. Barton scored at least two runs in every inning including a six-run third frame.
Barton was led by sophomore second baseman Jordan Blake (Jackson Springs, N.C.) with two hits and three runs batted in while senior third baseman Jessica Onega (Belle Glade, Fla.) drove in two runs in the victory. On the mound, senior Hannah Jones (Huntersville, N.C.) earned her first win of the year after pitching a two-hit shutout while Chowan's Shannon Buchanan (Virginia Beach, Va.) suffered the loss.
Game Two – Chowan 6, Barton 3
Chowan's Alexis Grim (Front Royal, Va.) finished with two hits including a key two-run double in the sixth inning as the Hawks were able to salvage the split with the Bulldogs.
Trailing by a 5-0 score midway through the sixth frame, Barton tried to rally with three runs highlighted by a two-run double from Onega but couldn't get any closer. Blake and freshman outfielder Sidney Gronowski (Fayetteville, N.C.) both tallied three hits and a run scored despite the loss. Jones (1-2) took the setback on the mound.
Chowan's EmaRae Flores (Covina, Calif.) (1-1) earned her first win of the year after going the distance and allowing just two earned runs with two strikeouts.
Barton returns to the field on Saturday, February 9, against Wingate in a doubleheader at home beginning at Noon while Chowan plays on the road against Mount Olive in a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 2:00 p.m.
