TEMPE, Ariz. – The Barton College men's tennis team put four on the 2019 ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete Team. ITA is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Bulldogs were also an All-Academic Team honoree.
Junior Rory Gaydon (Darlington, ENGLAND) and sophomores Alessandro Gerbino (Borlange, SWEDEN), Hugh Ryder (Dartmouth, ENGLAND) and Oscar Marmestedt (Akersberga, SWEDEN) all earned scholar-athlete honors this year for the Bulldogs. Gaydon, Gerbino and Ryder were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the second straight season.
Both Gaydon and Marmestedt were named to the 2019 All-Conference Carolinas Third Team. Gaydon totaled 11 victories at both No. 2 singles and doubles while Marmestedt (12-9, 6-3) was the team's third singles player.
Gerbino notched eight victories at fourth singles while Ryder won 10 times at both singles and doubles competition for the Bulldogs this year. All four players led Barton to an 11-10 record including a 6-3 mark in Conference Carolinas play – good for a third-place tie in the league regular season standings – and a berth in the conference tournament.
The ITA All-Academic Teams boast at team grade point average of 3.2 or higher. ITA Scholar-Athletes must meet the following criteria: 1) lettered one year on varsity, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 or higher on a 4.00 scale and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is committed to serving college tennis and returning the leaders of tomorrow. As the governing body of college tennis, the ITA oversees men's and women's varsity tennis at NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College divisions. The ITA administers a comprehensive awards and rankings program for men's and women's varsity players, coaches and teams in all divisions, providing recognition for their accomplishments on and off the court.
