WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's soccer team (13-4-1) tuned up for the league tournament with a 2-1 triumph over a game Piedmont International squad Tuesday evening at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex. The Bruins ended the season with a record of 8-6-2.
Barton freshman forward Omar Aboutaleb (Asheboro, N.C.) scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season – the match-winner at the 7:36 mark of the first half – while freshman defender Tobias Nielson (Dalvik, ICELAND) added his fourth goal of the year with a header off a corner kick in the 43rd minute courtesy of sophomore midfielder Ludovic Rocha (Boulogne Billancourt, FRANCE).
Piedmont International cut the margin in half with a goal from Mario Salinas (Winston-Salem, N.C.) just 16 seconds remaining before intermission but the Bulldogs were able to hold on from there. The second half was scoreless while Barton freshman Jacob Randolph (Metairie, La.) earned the win in goal after making a pair of saves.
Barton also held a slim 12-10 margin in shots taken in winning its second straight match while the Bruins' Jeremiah Gibbs (Midland, N.C.) suffered the loss despite five stops on the evening.
Barton, the fourth seed in the Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Tournament Championship, will host fifth-seeded Limestone on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., in an opening-round contest at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.
