WILSON, N.C. – The USC Aiken men's soccer team (4-8) upset Barton (11-4-1), 3-2, in double overtime Tuesday evening in a non-conference regional affair at Electric Supply Company Field.
The Pacers' broke a two-all tie with the match-winning goal by Chukwadi Apugo (Abuja, NIGERIA) in the 106th minute of the second overtime. Apugo finished off a shot after a breakaway down the center of the field.
USC Aiken – who rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 – snapped a two-match losing streak. Austin Boafo (Brampton, Ontario, CANADA) forced overtime with a goal with just under eight minutes remaining in the second half.
Barton junior forward Ruben Mancio (Cadiz, SPAIN) scored his team-leading ninth goal of the year just over 10 minutes into the contest while freshman forward Immanuel Akpeme (Richmond, Va.) added a score and the Bulldogs held a 22-16 advantage in shots taken despite the setback. Barton freshman forward Jonas Svavarsson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) was credited with assists on both goals.
In goal, USC Aiken's Brendan Gribek (Martinez, Ga.) earned the victory while senior Francisco Noguera (Santiago, CHILE) suffered the setback. Both players made six saves on the day.
Barton travels to Banner Elk, N.C., to take on Lees-McRae in the Conference Carolinas regular season finale on Saturday beginning at 4:00 p.m., while USC Aiken hosts North Georgia on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
