WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's lacrosse team (2-8, 1-1) won a milestone contest on Saturday – its first-ever Conference Carolinas and home victory – in a thrilling 13-12 triumph over Lees-McRae (3-5, 0-3) at Electric Supply Company Field.
Barton sophomore midfielder Zachary Hodge (Murrieta, Calif.) led all scorers with five goals as the Bulldogs rallied from a 9-7 deficit early in the second half to take the win and snap a six-game losing streak. Sophomore midfielder Jake Copio (Smyrna, Del.) broke an 11-all tie with the game-winning goal with 13:51 left in the contest.
Barton freshman midfielder Hunter Huxoll (Dunkirk, Md.) and junior midfielder Bodin Nichols (Brainerd, Minn.) added two goals and an assist each as the Bulldogs held a decisive edge in ground balls (44-30) while freshman Trevor Witholt (Murrieta, Calif.) played the second half and stopped 11 shots in holding off the Bobcats.
Lees-McRae was led by Jackson Galloway (Frederick, Md.) with four goals and Alec Molander (Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA) added five total points – three goals and two assists – despite the loss. In goal, Cameron Castle (Fort Collins, Colo.) suffered the loss despite 12 saves. The Bobcats did manage a 34-30 advantage in shots taken in the contest.
The Bulldogs will next travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to take on Chowan in a league contest on Saturday, March 23, at 1:00 p.m., while Lees-McRae takes on Emmanuel (Ga.) next Saturday on the road beginning at 2:00 p.m.
