Barton men’s basketball wins second straight, 88-78 over Virginia State at the Pickle Classic

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (2-3) won its second straight game, 88-78 over Virginia State (3-2) Saturday on the final day of the 54th annual Pickle Classic at Kornegay Arena on the campus of the University of Mount Olive.

Barton senior guard Michael Boykin (Clinton, N.C.) led the Bulldogs in scoring for the second straight game, finishing with 25 points in addition to 10-of-12 free throw shooting while senior forward Isaiah Buck-Lowman (Woodbridge, Va.) added 23 points as the shorthanded squad was able to pull out the victory.

The Bulldogs held a 47-46 advantage at the 17:51 mark of the second half before reeling off 12 straight points over the next three minutes to take control.  Senior guard Jeff Gordon (Woodbridge, Va.) and junior guard David Campbell (Severn, Md.) added 15 points each for the Bulldogs, who led by as many as 18 points late in the contest.

Barton shot 50 percent (32-of-64) from the floor and forced Virginia State into 14 turnovers in the victory.  Virginia State was led by Francis Fitzgerald (Danville, Va.) with 18 points off the bench but the Trojans hit just seven-of-25 (28 percent) from behind the three-point line.

Barton opens up Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, November 23, at home against Erskine beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Virginia State takes on Johnson C. Smith Thursday on the road beginning at 7:30 p.m.
