BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Barton men's basketball team (19-7, 12-4) pushed its winning streak to five games with a 97-78 victory over Lees-McRae (10-16, 6-10) Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium in a Conference Carolinas contest.
Barton senior forward Bobby Stenborg (Raleigh, N.C.) led all scorers with 22 points on nine-of-12 shooting while sophomore forward Isaiah Reddish (Durham, N.C.) added 18 points as the Bulldogs finished off the season sweep of the Bobcats. Barton also clinched a home quarterfinal game in the 2019 Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament on Tuesday, March 5.
The Bulldogs – who jumped out to a 49-31 advantage at intermission – rode its hot shooting to the victory. Barton shot 54 percent (35-of-65) from the field and hit 11 three-pointers. Sophomore guard Jake Kakar (Boston, Moss.) and senior guard Matt Woods (Swannanoa, N.C.) both scored 15 points and hit three treys for the Bulldogs, who also dished out 25 assists.
Lees-McRae was led by Jerick Haynes (Shelby, N.C.) with 18 points off the bench and the Bobcats connected on 22-of-25 free throw attempts despite suffering its third straight loss. Barton led by as many as 22 points – 59-37 on a lay-up by Stenborg with 15:57 left – and Lees-McRae couldn't get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Barton hits the court again on Saturday, February 23, against King in a Conference Carolinas game in Bristol, Tenn., beginning at 4:00 p.m., while Lees-McRae hosts Erskine Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
