FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Barton baseball team (25-18, 13-9) used some last-inning heroics to down Emmanuel (Georgia) (20-22, 11-13), 11-8, in a Conference Carolinas game late Friday afternoon at Tommy Carey Field.
Barton junior first baseman Chase Riker (Hampstead, N.C.) broke a seven-all tie with the game-winning grand slam in the top of the ninth inning. Riker finished with three hits and seven runs batted in as the Bulldogs rallied from a 4-1 deficit to earn the win.
Barton senior third baseman Gatlin Pate (Grays Creek, N.C.) and senior designated hitter Juan Martinez (Weston, Fla.) both added three hits and an RBI while Martinez hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year and the visitors totaled 15 hits in the victory.
Emmanuel's Dustin McNicholl (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) hit a three-run home run and the Lions also totaled 15 hits despite the loss.
Barton sophomore Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) improved to 3-4 after earning the victory in relief while senior Andrew Davis (Westminster, Md.) recorded the final out with the bases loaded for his first save of the year. Emmanuel's Kyle Heuchert (Hampton, Ga.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend league series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at Noon.
