MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Barton (17-9, 5-4) and Mount Olive (14-4, 5-2) split a Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Scarborough Field. The Bulldogs came from behind to win the first contest by a 7-6 score before Trojans salvaged the split with a 9-1 victory in the nightcap. Mount Olive is ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II.
Game One – Barton 7, Mount Olive 6 (eight innings)
Barton senior second baseman Hunter Pearre (Poolesville, Md.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning with two outs which scored the game-winning run as the Bulldogs rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take the victory. The Bulldogs also won their second straight league weekend series.
Barton junior center Brayden Olsen (Spokane, Wash.) hit a three-run home run while senior Dylan Ward (Laurinburg, N.C.) improved to 3-0 on the year after striking out nine batters over six innings of work and sophomore Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for his first save of the year.
Mount Olive's Joe Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) drove in two runs while the Trojans' Austin Kapela (Seaford, Del.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Coy Barnett (LaGrange, N.C.) forced extra innings with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for the home team despite the loss.
Game Two – Mount Olive 9, Barton 1
The Trojans' Caleb Irwin (Marble, N.C.) (3-0) allowed just one run in seven innings of work while striking out five batters and Logan Welch (Winston-Salem, N.C.) came through with the game-winning, two-run single in the bottom of the first inning as Mount Olive salvaged the split.
For Barton, junior designated hitter Noah Almond (Raleigh, N.C.) hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to help the Bulldogs avoid the shutout while junior Jakob Ryan (Carrollton, Va.) (2-3) suffered the loss. Senior catcher Juan Martinez (Weston, Fla.) had three hits in the losing effort for the visitors.
Barton returns home to take on UNC Pembroke on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., while Mount Olive hosts Wingate on Tuesday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
