WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (10-5) wrapped up its 11-game home stand with a doubleheader sweep of Piedmont International (0-4), 11-1 and 9-2, Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field.
Game One – Barton 11, Piedmont International 1 (five innings)
The Bulldogs scored early and often in run-ruling the Bruins. Barton scored at least two runs in every frame including a four-run first inning to set the tone highlighted by a bases-clearing double from senior outfielder Hunter Pearre (Poolesville, Md.).
Barton freshman outfielder Jacob Marcos (Miami, Fla.) added two hits and two runs batted in as the Bulldogs were aided by eight walks from Piedmont International pitchers. On the mound, Barton freshman Donovan Waitman (Valencia, Calif.) improved to 2-0 after throwing four scoreless innings of one-hit baseball while striking out four batters. The Bruins' Weston Markle (Watertown, Ohio) suffered the loss.
Game Two – Barton 9, Piedmont International 2
Marcos and senior outfielder Troy Maslowski (Cary, N.C.) both finished with two hits and three runs batted in for the Bulldogs, who broke open a close contest with a five-run sixth inning after holding a 4-2 advantage entering the frame.
Both Marcos and Maslowski had two-run singles in the inning as the Bulldogs completed the sweep of the Bruins. Barton junior Ben Tinnell (Salem, Ore.) (1-0) earned the win in relief while Piedmont International's Jacob Ladley (Brevard, N.C.) suffered the setback. The Bruins' John Giboyeaux (Dorado, PUERTO RICO) hit a solo home run in the losing effort.
Barton hits the road to take on North Greenville in the Conference Carolinas opener in Tigerville, S.C., on Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Piedmont International hosts Pfeiffer in a doubleheader in Mocksville, N.C, on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
