WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (3-3) opened the 2019 home portion of its schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Nyack (N.Y.) (0-2), 3-0 and 14-3, Saturday afternoon at Nixon Field. Both games were seven-inning affairs.
Game One – Barton 3, Nyack 0
Barton junior Colby Shimmel (Windsor, Pa.) (1-0) threw a three-hit shutout to lead the Bulldogs to the win. Shimmel did not walk a batter and struck out seven as well.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the bottom of the second thanks to a run-scoring single from junior shortstop JoJo Allen (Clarksville, Tenn.) before sophomore first baseman Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) added an RBI triple in the fifth frame. Allen finished with two hits for the contest while Nyack's David Gauthier (Mont Saint-Hilaire, CANADA) (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
Game Two – Barton 14, Nyack 3
Holding a 7-1 advantage entering the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs turned the contest into a rout with a seven-run frame to complete the sweep of the Warriors. Junior Peyton Ley (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore second baseman Ronaldo Del Duca (Pittsburgh, Pa.) highlighted the frame with two-run hits.
Allen added a two-run triple and was one of five Bulldogs to register two runs batted in for the contest. Barton junior Jakob Ryan (Carrollton, Va.) (1-1) earned the victory after pitching six innings of one-run ball while striking out four batters.
For Nyack, Gauthier drove in a run with a single while Chase Morris (Arlington, Texas) (0-1) was tagged with the setback.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday morning beginning at 11:00 a.m.
