CHESTERFIELD, Va. – The Barton men's and women's swimming teams put up a dominant performance on the first day of the Yellow Jacket Invitational – hosted by Randolph-Macon College – Saturday at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.
The men's team for the Bulldogs leads with a total of 1,326 points while the Barton women's squad sits in third place with 928.5 points. A total of 12 schools on both sides are competing in the event this weekend.
The Barton men's squad was spearheaded by its sweep of the four relays: the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.27), the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.93), the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:27.98) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:02.22).
Barton freshman Bartlomiej Swiderski (Warsaw, POLAND) was a member of three of those relays and won the men's 200-yard individual medley (1:50.84) and men's 100-yard backstroke (49.71) while establishing new school records and earning NCAA Division II "B" cut times in both events.
Barton senior Robert Zamorano (Woodstock, Ga.) and junior Jaksa Gabric (Zagreb, CROATIA) were also part of three of the first-place relay squads with both winning an individual event: Zamorano in the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.29) and Gabric in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.83).
On the women's side, Barton is led once again by junior Nicola Macdonald (Durban, SOUTH AFRICA). Macdonald spearheaded relay victories in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.93) and 800-yard freestyle (7:59.42) and individually won the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.45) and 200-yard freestyle (1:54.97) events.
Barton junior Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA) was also part of the two women's relay victories and won the 50-yard freestyle (24.12). In addition, freshman Moira Euker (Fredericksburg, Va.) placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a school-record time of 59.63.
The second and final day of competition takes place on Sunday.
