Barton volleyball opens league tournament with thrilling 3-2 victory over Limestone

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton volleyball team (15-15) pulled out all the stops in downing Limestone (12-13), 3-2, in thrilling fashion Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Conference Carolinas Championship at Wilson Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs, who downed the Saints by scores of 25-18, 32-34, 19-25, 25-18 and 18-16, rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take the win.  Barton was also down by a 13-10 score in the fifth and final set but was able to rally and defeat the Saints for the second time this year.

Barton was led by sophomore outside hitter Kaytlin Elkins (Hope Mills, N.C.) with a match and career-high 31 kills while senior setter Angelica Acevedo (Coamo, PUERTO RICO) added a double-double – 44 assists and 17 digs – in the victory.  Senior outside hitter Haley Headley (Callao, Va.) finished with 13 kills for the Bulldogs, who also tallied 16 blocks in the victory.  Elkins also pushed her league-leading kill total to 491.

For Limestone, three players – Victoria Norwood (Fort Collins, Colo.), Madyson Lousignont (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Madysen Williams (Antioch, Tenn.) – finished with 12 kills each and Mia Bergan (Aberdeen, S.D.) dished out 50 assists in the losing effort.

Barton, the second seed in the league's north division entering the tournament, will travel to Franklin Springs, Ga., to take on Emmanuel (Ga.) on Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m.  The Lions (21-8), the top seed in the South Division, defeated Lees-McRae (7-23) at home by a 3-1 score in their quarterfinal round match tonight.
