CENTRAL, S.C. – The Barton volleyball team (13-13, 9-2) rallied from two sets down to defeat Southern Wesleyan (7-15, 4-9), 3-2, in a Conference Carolinas match Friday night on the road at Tysinger Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs defeated the Warriors by scores of 17-25, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 15-10 and stayed in the hunt for the league regular season title.
Barton - winners of three straight contests - was led by sophomore outside hitter Kaytlin Elkins (Hope Mills, N.C.) with a match-high 24 kills and 18 digs while senior outside hitter Haley Headley (Callao, Va.) and senior middle blocker Allie Cullens (Tarpon Springs, Fla.) added 10 kills each in the victory.
Barton's Angelica Acevedo, a senior setter from Coamo, Puerto Rico, added a double-double as well – 38 assists and 21 digs – as the Bulldogs won their second fifth-set match this season. In addition, the Bulldogs limited the Warriors to just a 0.077 hitting percentage while totaling 10 service aces. Elkins now has a league-leading 410 kills on the year.
For Southern Wesleyan, Olivia Johnson (Anderson, S.C.) had 13 kills and 20 digs in the losing effort. The Warriors also lost their fourth straight contest.
Barton remains on the road to face North Greenville in a Conference Carolinas contest on Saturday beginning at 6:00 p.m., in Tigerville, S.C. Southern Wesleyan hosts Mount Olive in a league match Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
