Efficient offensive performance leads Bulldogs past Converse, 3-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-20) victory for the Barton College women's volleyball team on Saturday against Converse College improved the Bulldogs' record to 6-0 in Conference Carolinas action this season.

Barton (10-11, 6-0) recorded 45 kills and hit .289 as a team in the match en route to securing its seventh consecutive victory. Converse (4-17, 1-6) tallied just 20 kills in the match and committed 17 attack errors while hitting just 0.28 in the match.

Senior Allie Cullens recorded 10 kills and hit .533 for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Kaytlin Elkins produced a match-high 14 kills and a career-high 17 digs. Senior Haley Headley added seven kills for the Bulldogs, while senior Angelica Acevedo recorded a match-high 41 assists. Freshman Brittany Silance notched a match-high 19 digs, while redshirt senior Riley Bane delivered 15 digs and a pair of aces.

Morgan Pearson paced Converse with seven kills and recorded six digs, while Elizabeth Yohe added 11 digs and a pair of aces. Kiara Cannon recorded a solo block and two block assists to go along with three kills for the Valkyries.

The opening set between the Bulldogs and Valkyries would go back and forth as there would be six lead changes. Both sides would trade 3-0 rallies as Converse took an 8-6 lead following a kill from Yohe. BC answered with a run as an ace from sophomore Ashley Owen knotted the score 8-8 before an attack error gave the Bulldogs a 9-8 advantage. The Valkyries countered with a 3-0 run to open an 11-9 advantage off a kill from Cannon.

Barton took a 21-17 lead in the set after a kill from Cullens but would see Converse rally to cut the deficit to a single point after an ace from Kelsey Elliott. The Valkyries would rally again in the set as an ace by Yohe trimmed the deficit to 23-22. Consecutive kills from Elkins ended the set as Barton tallied a 25-22 victory in the set.

BC would lead from start to finish in the second set and open with a 4-0 run that would be capped by consecutive aces from Bane. Converse worked to trim the deficit to 9-6 before Barton answered with a 6-0 rally. Silance recorded a pair of aces in the run that would be capped by a kill from Elkins. Barton would go on another 4-0 run and increase its lead to 19-7 after a double-block from Acevedo and junior Kelsey Riquelme. The Bulldogs secured the second set with a double-block from Cullens and sophomore Camryn Frederick.

Converse had its best offensive stretch of the match in the third set as a 6-0 run erased a three-point deficit and turned into an 8-5 lead. Trailing 14-13, Barton would knot the score off a kill from Elkins. BC followed the kill from Elkins with a 4-0 rally that included a pair of kills from Headley and an ace from Acevedo. After seeing the lead trimmed to 23-20, the Bulldogs closed the match with kills from freshman Sarah Kirk and Riquelme to secure the 3-0 sweep of the match.

The Bulldogs return to action next week with a trip to Bristol, Tenn. as Barton faces King University on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. BC will look to complete the season sweep of the Tornado after defeating King at home earlier this season.
