HIGH POINT, N.C. – Barton College freshman Janae Cunningham has been named the Conference Carolinas Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Cunningham was honored after setting Barton school records in all four throwing events – discus, hammer throw, shot put and javelin – at the Phoenix Invitational, hosted by Elon University.
The Hubert, N.C., resident led all NCAA Division II competitors in two of the four events and was second among DII participants in the other two.
In the discus, Cunningham added to her league-leading mark with a toss of 39.77 meters. In the hammer throw, she jumped from 13th in the conference to fourth after adding more than seven meters to her previous best with a toss of 38.05 meters.
Cunningham became the third team member to hold the BC record in the shot put this season after making a toss of 11.67 meters. In the javelin, she launched a throw of 30.48 meters to easily surpass Amber Wilson's 2014 record.
In the meet, she placed fourth overall in the javelin, fifth in the shot put, sixth in the discus and eighth in the hammer.
The award is the first of Cunningham's career.
Her selection gives Barton three straight Field Athlete of the Week awards. Jamina Morris was chosen two weeks ago after earning an NCAA provisional mark in the triple jump, and Poole was recognized last week after setting a school record in the shot put and personal record in the discus.
Barton hopes to make it four straight after it competes on Saturday in the USC Open, which will be hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
