Barton women’s tennis opens 2019 spring season with 7-0 sweep of Methodist

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's tennis team opened the 2019 spring season with a 7-0 shutout victory over Methodist Sunday afternoon at the Bulldogs complex.  The Bulldogs are 1-0 on the year while the Monarchs fall to 0-1.  The doubles play counts as one decision.

All six players for the Bulldogs – seniors Daria Avram (Buzau, ROMANIA) and Vanessa Sanoja (Bolivar, VENEZUELA), junior Marissa Stevenson (Kirk Michael, ISLE OF MAN), sophomores Claudia Capellades (Barcelona, SPAIN) and Ada Vargas (Lima, PERU) and freshman Isabella Caballero (La Paz, BOLIVIA) – won at singles and doubles for the Bulldogs.

Both Avram and Vargas won in third-set tiebreakers at first and fourth singles, respectively, over Methodist's Ashton Walker (Pikeville, N.C.) and Jill Lawrence (Hauppauge, N.Y.).

Barton returns to the court on Friday, February 8, to take on Wingate at 4:00 p.m., in the 2019 City of Florence Invitational in Florence, S.C.  Methodist hosts Fayetteville State on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
