Women's tennis goes 2-1 in CC/SAC Challenge
by Benny Benton
WILSON, N.C.–The Barton College women's tennis team went 2-1 over the weekend in the Conference Carolinas/South Atlantic Conference Challenge, defeating Catawba College, 5-0, and Brevard College, 5-2, but falling to Carson-Newman University, 5-2.
The matches were part of a two-day event held at the Barton Tennis Complex featuring three men's and women's teams from each league. Conference Carolinas won the Challenge, 6-3, over the South Atlantic Conference programs. In addition to the two wins by the Lady Bulldogs, the league received one win from Limestone and three from Mount Olive.
Barton dropped its first match in the Challenge Friday morning to Carson-Newman after being swept in doubles play. The Lady Bulldogs' No. 2 team of Randi Price and Meredith Pruden forced a tiebreaker in that match, but fell 9-7.
Smiljana Kljajic won a hard-fought match for Barton at No. 1 singles in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, against an all-conference player in Carson-Newman's Stefy Stand, and Meredith Pruden claimed her match at No. 4 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. However, the Eagles won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, the latter match between Carson-Newman's Patricia Guerreiro and Barton's Alicia Lasry going to a third set after a marathon first frame. Guerreiro eventually won the match, 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 6-2, to seal the win for the Eagles.
On Friday evening, the Lady Bulldogs bounced back to take a 5-2 win over the Brevard College Tornados. Brevard only brought four players due to injury, so Barton won three matches by default and only needed two wins on the court to claim the match. Those victories came at No. 2 doubles, where Price and Pruden easily downed Brevard's duo, 8-1, and at No. 4 singles, where Pruden cruised past Nirvana Silva, 6-2, 6-0.
Barton's final match came Saturday afternoon, and the Lady Bulldogs blanked Catawba, 5-0. The duo of Kljajic and Lasry won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Pruden and Price claimed No. 2 doubles, 8-2. The Lady Bulldogs won No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by default, leaving Barton needing just one singles win on the court to claim the match. Caroline Fischer was the first to finish off her opponent, winning in the No. 5 slot, 6-3, 6-0. Barton was leading in all four of the other matches when play was stopped after the Lady Bulldogs' match-clenching victory was posted.
The three dual matches were the only ones scheduled for the team in the fall.
