WILSON, N.C.-The Barton College tennis teams will begin its 2012-13 season in the annual Conference Carolinas Fall Tournament this coming weekend (Sept. 14-16) and fifth year head coach Tom Schrecengost has announced the rest of the men's and women's tennis competition dates that will follow for both the fall and spring semesters.
The Conference Carolinas Fall Tournament is an individual bracket style tournament played in Sumter, S.C., that brings together most affiliated institutions from the league to help kickoff the new competition year. The 2012 edition of the league fall tourney will be hosted by Coker College (each year a different member hosts).
The Lady Bulldogs – who finished last season with a 10-10 overall record and 6-4 mark in the league – will be the first BC tennis program to compete in a dual match this season when Barton hosts William Peace College on Friday, Sept. 21. Other non-conference teams the Lady Bulldogs are only slated to play are Meredith College (away) and UNC Pembroke (home).
Barton men's tennis – 5-12 overall and 2-7 in the conference in 2011-12 – will play in a second individual bracket style tournament in the fall when the Bulldogs participate in the Methodist Invitational on the weekend of Oct. 5-7. BC men are only listed to play non-conference dual matches against Averett College (home) and East Carolina University (away).
The Barton tennis teams will play several common non-conference opponents throughout the campaign including a home and away series against Catawba College beginning with a road trip to Salisbury, N.C., this fall (Oct. 3) before wrapping up the regular season in its home finale against the Indians on Tuesday, April 9.
The home Catawba match will also serve as Senior Day for the Lady Bulldogs (Barton men's roster consists of all underclassmen).
Other mutual non-conference opposition for both Barton tennis teams includes its spring opener at Francis Marion University, (Feb. 2) and additional road trips to Chowan University, Lenoir-Rhyne University and Milligan College.
Barton tennis will begin Conference Carolinas play in its spring home opener against North Greenville University on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Bulldogs will also host league foes Converse College (women only), Erskine College, Pfeiffer University, Limestone College, and Lees-McRae College. Barton's conference road calendar includes battles at Belmont Abbey College, Queens University of Charlotte, Coker College, Mount Olive College, and King College.
The 2013 Conference Carolinas Championships will once again be hosted by Erskine College at the Sumter Tennis Center on the weekend of April 18-20. The league titles will be decided in an eight-team bracket elimination tournament format (top eight teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season advance to the tourney).
