ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Kleanza Cathers registered a pair of victories and Nicola Macdonald collected one as well for the Barton College women's swim team in a dual meet Saturday against NCAA Division I program Howard University.
The Bison captured the meet victory, 119-81, for its third straight win.
Cathers, a freshman from Kitimat, Canada, set Barton school records in both of her event wins. She took the 100-yard individual medley in a time of 1:02.85, and claimed the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:25.30. The reigning Conference Carolinas Women's Swimmer of the Week also posted a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle after an effort of 2:00.61.
Macdonald, a freshman from Durbin, South Africa, produced a victory in the 100-yard freestyle, taking first place in a time of 55.74 seconds. She added a runner-up showing in the 50-yard freestyle (25.90), and anchored Barton's second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.18). Macdonald was joined in that event by Kazia Patzer, Kristen Price and Alayna Moore.
Patzer also set a benchmark school record in the 50-yard butterfly, as Barton competed in the event for the first time in the program's brief history. Patzer established the benchmark at 27.87 seconds. A second benchmark school record was set by Callie Burnette in the 50-yard breaststroke, a mark of 33.03 seconds recorded during a runner-up finish.
Also earning a second-place finish in the meet was Adie Powell, who did so in the 1000-yard freestyle with a personal record time of 11:48.67. Barton's 200-yard medley relay foursome of Burnette, Patzer, Price and Aly Jones claimed a runner-up showing as well, taking second in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:57.99.
The Lady Bulldogs added six third-place showings – Burnette in the 50-yard backstroke (31.25), Moore in the 50-yard freestyle (25.95) and 100-yard freestyle (56.61), Kaylee Davis in the 100-yard individual medley, and Annika Jasek-Rysdahl in the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.77) and 500-yard freestyle (5:45.66).
Barton will return to competition on December 1 and 2 in the Yellow Jacket Invite, which will be hosted by Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va.
