SALISBURY, N.C. – One goal is all that would be needed on Friday night to decide a winner between the Barton College Bulldogs and the Catawba College Indians at the Frock Soccer Complex in a non-conference women's soccer matchup. The Indians tallied the eventual game-winner in the 74th minute off the foot of Jovana Sanchez.

Barton (2-1) dropped its first contest of the season after blanking its opponents through each of the first two matches. BC recorded five shots in the contest with a pair coming on frame in the first half. Catawba (3-0) fired three shots on net in the first half but would only need one on frame in the second stanza.

Sophomore Hannah Beard tallied a pair of shots for Barton in the contest with one finding its way on frame. Senior Laisy Scardazzi also recorded one shot on goal in the contest, while senior Macenzie Christensen and junior Chelsey Hawley each added a shot for the Bulldogs. Junior goalkeeper Megan Bolick had her shutout streak snapped at 236 minutes with the tally in the 74th minute of play.

Sanchez delivered both of her shots on net in the contest, while Shelby Vasich added three shots with one finding its way on net for the Indians. Mackenzie Rennie also recorded a shot on goal for Catawba.

The Bulldogs recorded both of their shots on frame at the 6:20 mark of the first half as Scardazzi had her attempt saved by Catawba netminder Shelby Thompson. Beard would then follow with another shot on frame after collecting the ball off the initial save only to have it smothered again by Thompson.

Catawba tested Bolick for the first time in the contest at the 6:52 mark as she would deny Vasich from getting the Indians onto the scoreboard. Bolick would have to make two more saves in the half to keep the contest scoreless as Rennie and Sanchez both had opportunities for Catawba.

It appeared the contest would be a scoreless tie with time winding down in the second half until Sanchez made her mark on the scoresheet. Sanchez took a shot from the top corner and from 25 yards out would beat Bolick to make it 1-0 at the 73:03 mark.

Beard looked to provide the late equalizer for the Bulldogs in the 87th minute only to see her attempt go wide.

Bolick (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season while allowing her first goal in net for BC. Bolick finished the contest with three saves off four shots. Thompson (3-0) stopped both attempts that came her way in the contest en route to recording her second straight shutout for the Indians.

Barton will head back to Salisbury, N.C. on Sunday to face Mars Hill University at 1 p.m. in its final matchup at the Catawba Classic.
