WILSON, N.C. – Barton College and Converse College battled through regulation and two overtimes before settling for a scoreless tie in their Conference Carolinas women's soccer matchup Wednesday at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex.
The draw was the second in a row for the Lady Bulldogs, which matched Lees-McRae College on Saturday, 2-2. The ties for Barton both came against top-four teams in the league's preseason poll.
The two sides combined for 29 shots on Wednesday, but none found the net. Goalkeepers Rachel Stalford of Converse and Haley Sauls had something to do with that. Stalford, who has not allowed a goal this year in nearly 250 minutes, turned away eight Barton shots, while Sauls stopped six Converse attempts.
Barton (1-2-2, 0-0-2) took 19 total attempts compared to 10 for the Valkyries (1-1-2, 0-0-1). The Lady Bulldogs also enjoyed a considerable 10-1 edge in corner kicks, but could not turn those into scoring opportunities.
BC junior Laisy Scardazzi posted seven shot attempts, including three on goal, and sophomore Rebekah Beal added three more attempts, one of those on frame. The two players accounted for the only two Barton shots in overtime, missing high on the final attempt of each overtime period.
Scardazzi in particular had chances early in the match, with Stalford recording saves on two of her shots in the first 12 minutes of the contest.
Barton will return to action on Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked No. 22 Limestone College in a 2 p.m. match.
